Robbie Burns and "Auld Lang Syne"

I absolutely love the poetry of Robert Burns.
He is one of my absolute favorite poets.

If you didn't know...
"Auld Lang Syne" is a poem that was written by Robert Burns in 1788.

Over time it became synonymous with New Year's celebrations.

It is also sung at funerals, graduations, or the ending of other occasions.

The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" actually translates to
"old, long since"
"long, long ago"
or more loosely...
"for the sake of old times."

"Auld Lang Syne"

"Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stoup,
And surely I'll be mine;
And we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld, etc.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.
For auld, etc.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd.
Sin' auld lang syne.
For auld, etc.

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak' a right gud-wellie waught,
For auld lang syne.
For auld, etc."

Christmases Past

When Christmas comes around every year, there are always some memories and traditions that can't be forgotten. Everyone has those things they do with their family every year; maybe you put up your tree on a certain day, maybe you make cookie with your kids, maybe you have certain holiday meals. The point is, Christmas means many things to many people.

So, when the holidays roll around every year, I immediately think of my great-grandmother and the days and days she would spend making tons and tons of Christmas candy and other goodies. For my family, this is one of the most special memories we have. She was an amazing cook, especially when it came to her Christmas candy. She was always so proud and happy to share. She made it all; Millionaires, Divinity, Cheese Straws, Holiday Chex Mix, and so many more...

Its hard to believe that it has been nearly ten years since we have eaten any of her Christmas specialties.

I still miss my Mam-maw.

My First Birchbox

A few weeks ago, I made a post about how I finally decided to check out Birchbox. You can read more about that here.

Well, today, I finally received my first Birchbox! I was so super exited! I walked up to my door, and there was this cute, little, pink box just waiting to be opened.

So, I finally was able to sit down and open, what felt like, an early Christmas present. It was full of little surprises.

The first sample was a great little lip gloss sample from Jouer. Apparently, its a specially made sample color called "Birchbox Pink."

Next, there was a sample from Benefit Cosmetics called "The POREfessional." Its supposed to camouflage visible pores. It can be worn underneath or on top of make-up.

Also included was a sample of Mythic Oil from L'Oreal Professionel. This is a lightweight oil that is supposed to increase shine and prevent frizziness.

I also received a sample energy drink mix. I'm not really sure about this one. I think it makes me a little nervous for some reason.

The box also contained a sample of Showstoppers, a double-sided tape strip to help make sure clothing stays in its place.

And lastly, I think I was supposed to receive a sample of "Ageless" perfume form Harvey Prince.

See, they included the little packet that the samples come in...

But, when I opened it, this is what I found...

Apparently, someone messed up with this one. I didn't get this particular sample. Sadly, I think this would have been one of my favorite items. I love perfume and body sprays, and a I'm always looking for new and interesting scents.

All in all, I think I'm pretty satisfied with my first Birchbox. I'm already excited to receive next month's box. I received some great samples this month that I'm super excited to use.

Have any of you ever received a Birchbox? Have you every received anything you absolutely loved OR absolutely hated?

And yet another Pinterest victim...

As the title may have clued you in...I have fallen victim to the craze that is Pinterest. Although I have been poking around there for a while, I have been reluctant to mention it here.

But anyway, as I am sure most of you know, there are tons of great things just waiting to be found; recipes, projects, name it, you can probably find it.

So, this brings me to the point where I want to share some of the more interesting or helpful things I have found lately.

We'll call this "Are you Pinterested?"

Heck, I might even hop over to Picnic and make a cute little button to use next time, or I might even make this a regular thing around here...who knows.

Moving are my most recent, favorite Pinterest picks...

If you're interested, I would love to see you over at my Pinterest can click here

So, what about you? Have you found anything amazing on Pinterest that you would like to share?

If so, make sure to post a link!

Woo Pig Sooie

In this house, we are a Razorback family. There is no room in this home to be anything other than a Razorback fan. That said, today is our biggest game of the season, the most important win of the season.

This game is an annual tradition, for both sides. Every year, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, fans gather to witness the outcome of this long-standing rivalry.

Last year, Arkansas won with a score of 31-23.

So, this afternoon, my husband and I, along with every other Razorback fan, will eagerly anticipate the massacre of the LSU Tigers.

For more information on the history of the Arkansas/LSU Rivalry, click here.

*Update...several hours later...
The game did not go quite as well as we had hoped.

In recent months, I've seen lots of blog posts and YouTube videos about Birchbox. At first I was kind of confused and not really sure what it was all about, but eventually I got the picture and I was a little intrigued.

If you aren't familiar with Birchbox, it's simply a service that you can subscribe to for $10 a month, and each month you receive a package of 4 to 5 great sample products. And this is what I was slightly concerned about, this is what has kept me from subscribing before now. I was always a little worried about not getting anything that I would use or would find practical. One Birchbox video said that some months the samples are really great, and some months...not so much. And that's just the gamble that goes along with this. But, usually everything balances out. Apparently, for every disappointing box, there will eventually be a really great box. So, after all the great reviews I've seen, I thought that I would have to at least give it a try.

So, now, here I sit, waiting to receive my first Birchbox. I know it will be December before I receive it, but I'll have to make sure to post about what I receive and whether I will continue with my subscription.

How about you? Do you have an experience with Birchbox? Do you enjoy it?

30 Days of Truth: Day 4

Day 4: Something you have to forgive someone for...

Something I have to forgive someone for...well, this one isn't terribly hard for me. Usually I like to think of myself as a pretty mellow, easy going kind of gal. I don't usually hold grudges. I may be angry or upset for a little while, but eventually everything blows over and I'm back to normal. In general, its kind of hard for me to come up with someone or something that I am completely unforgiving about, but....there is this one thing that I just can't seem to let go of...

Let's rewind a bit...I have one particular friend. We have been friends for years! Seriously...years. I don't remember NOT knowing this person. We literally grew up together. This specific friend was one of my best friends for a long time, and he was always my very best guy friend. We were never romantic or anything like that, ever, we were always just friends. And we had a great friendship.

Well, we grew up. His family moved away, but we still kept in touch and remained great friends, even though he lived a few hours away. Our relationship stayed pretty solid. We spoke often, discussed important decisions and events going on in each other's lives. Then, eventually, the day came when I got a phone call and found out he was getting married.

I was happy for him. I met the girl, she seemed nice enough. She was cute, giggly, and completely girly. She was great for him as far as I was concerned. So, they get married, I attend the wedding, get them a pretty amazing wedding gift, and try to be a great friend.

Well, as has happened with other guy friends I have had, when a romantic relationship begins, my platonic relationship with my friend gets put on the back burner, and rightfully so. I'm not disputing that. The priority in any marriage should be the spouse. So, my communication with my friend began to fizzle. We were still friends, still spoke occasionally, but it was different.

Then, the next year, his father died. It was sudden and unexpected. So, the moment I find out, I call my friend to offer my condolences, my support, and anything else that he or his family may need. However, when I call, She answers the phone. As soon as she hears my voice and I ask to speak to my friend, I hear her say to him..."It's HER...Do you really want to talk to HER?" Thankfully enough, I hear my friend say "Of course I do." So, we speak. A few days later, my family attends the funeral. And nothing else really happens.

Well, several months later, I get a phone call from my mother asking if I had spoken to this friend recently. I tell her no, that our conversations had become fewer and farther between since his marriage. Then, my mother tells me that's why she is calling...he is getting  divorce. Turns out...he was letting her handle all the financial responsibilities of the household and she had spent EVERYTHING and had decided to leave. Seriously, she had spent every dime he had to his name, including anything he received after the death of his father.

Even though my friendship never really got back to the way it was...I still cannot forgive this girl for what she did to my friend. I cannot let this go. It's not even my grudge to hold...but I take my friends seriously. I saw what my friend went through during this and how it affected him. In my head I know that this really isn't my business. It isn't my problem or anything for me to be concerned with, but I can't help it. I can't seem to let this one go...
